CATHY ABRAMSON

Although Cathy Abramson was born in a small city, Middletown, New York, her work concentrates on the urban environment. Recent paintings explore the dichotomy of artifact and the new in the built environment as well as change in people's lives.

In her current practice Cathy Abramson imagines the stories behind the people and places she paints and examines what lies beneath the surface. The stories are now more ambiguous and the narrative more mysterious.

Cathy sees poetry in the ordinary and although she paints particular people and scenes, her local paintings of Washington, DC and surrounds resonate with everyone.

Abramson explores the urban environment through the more painterly aspects of her subject matter; the linear quality of buildings under construction and the effect of light and shadow on the geometry of the built environment.

Cathy’s representational paintings examine the temporal qualities of city life and the effect of this rapid change on the urban environment. The artwork explores the physical backdrop as well as the connections or estrangement of people as they go about their daily lives.

Cathy Abramson paints in oils and has been exhibiting in juried solo and group shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region for the past 25 years and has work in many pubic and private collections.
