MARION GRIFFIN
Marion L. Griffin’s artworks are typically based on acrylic and collage, a combination of handmade and purchased paper, found objects, acrylic paint and mediums, or cold wax and oil where cold wax medium is combined with oil paint then layered onto boards for the desired effect. Pottery tools, stencils, and implements that make unique marks/shapes are used throughout the creative process.
Marion says, “Inspiration comes from a variety of places; nature, family, photos, my inner journey and a passion for spontaneity. Vibrant color, abstract shapes and a desire to explore who I am as an artist inspires me to move the brush with exuberance and flair. The longing for artistic authenticity is what nudges me to cultivate my craft and discover my unique place in the art world.”
In 1998, after retiring from thirty years of teaching dance and choreography, at both the high school and college levels, Griffin had the great fortune to visit The East Wing in Washington, DC., where a retrospect of America’s greatest Abstract Expressionist painters was on exhibit. After a unique opportunity in 1983 to dance with Twyla Tharp and Anna Sokolow at American University, she decided to explore Abstract Expressionism by taking art classes with abstract painter Janet Schmeider.
Born in Cambridge MA, Marion moved as a young child to the Maryland area with her family. She subsequently earned a BS degree from the University of Maryland and an MA degree from American University in Washington DC.
In 2003, Marion enrolled in the Frederick Community College Art Department. For the next several years, she painted with Irina Smulevitch, Peter Whitting, Cynthia Bausch, and Dave Moreland, and Mark Brockman all of whom helped her hone her technique and depth of understanding.
Marion says, “Today I continue my journey into the world of Abstract Expressionism under the guidance of two exceptional artists, Ed Ramsburg and Skip Lawrence. Their knowledge, skill, and willingness to share their gifts never cease to inspire.”
